We vaccinate to protect our future!
Services included:
- Accessing student information data systems in all districts, Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD), and Oregon ALERT Immunization Registry to enter and retrieve records.
- Providing free in-school immunization clinics for required and recommended vaccines to students and school personnel.
- Responding to H1N1 influenza epidemic by conducting mass community immunization clinics at no cost to clients.
- Preparing reports for tracking immunization compliance and risk for disease.
- Preparing exclusion documents per county health officer’s direction.
- Providing additional clerical assistance to field staff and school personnel in managing tracking and maintenance of student immunization records.
- Providing on-site training to programs and school personnel without assigned HSS nursing services regarding immunization tracking procedures and mandatory reporting processes.
Data and Outcomes:
- Data entered into district information systems for 15,984 immunization records. SHS field staff additionally entered 3,470 records into the student information databases.
- 9,548 parent letters were prepared and mailed by November 2009.
- Through contractual agreements with MCHD 5,409 exclusion orders and letters were mailed by January 2010. By the state mandated February exclusion, 4,282, (79%) students were cleared with 1,127 students actually excluded.
- Researched and faxed 284 immunization records at request of health care providers, schools, and families.
- HSS staff provided assistance at 19 community or in- school immunization clinics in Multnomah and County schools and programs resulting in 609 vaccines given for school attendance.
- In response to the H1N1 influenza epidemic, HSS staff immunized 899 students and community members at no cost clinics throughout Multnomah County.
Immunization staff researched:
- 7,101 students’ records identified as needing additional vaccinations were researched through the statewide ALERT Immunization Registry website. 4,125 records were found with additional information, and of these records 1,784 (43%) were "complete" for school attendance with no further vaccines required.
- Staff provided support and clerical assistance for field staff at 50 school sites with updating student immunization records, which resulted in processing 3,228 records and health cards.
- Provided daily telephone consultation to approximately 30-50 parents, graduated students, health care providers and school staff regarding immunization requirements, and exclusion laws. Program staff fielded 320 phone calls during the November parent notification cycle, and 350 field calls during the February Exclusion cycle as a support to parents, schools, and the Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD).

Three office assistants provide support to schools to manage data and monitor compliance with Oregon’s regulations. This year the Department of Health and Social Services Immunization Program responded to the request by local public health authorities to participate in organizing and conducting mass community immunization clinics due to the H1N1 influenza outbreak.
