Bill Uhlig

Bill Uhlig is part designer, part artist, part technology mechanic and full-time problem solver. He is our expert graphic artist. His print industry career began in 1985 as a typesetter. He has lived through the transition from the primitive days of pasting up galley type to a totally digital world. He can work with your electronic files or take you ideas, rough draft, chicken scratches and create the file that will print accurately and beautifully.

Frequently Asked Questions For Bill:

Do I need to have a finished, ready to print project?

No, we can handle all aspects of design. We'll help you brainstorm, we'll take your cocktail napkin doodles and we'll come up with an original, unique design...a stunning piece that will fit your needs and one you will be proud to hand out. We specialize in fitting your project to your audience and budget.

What kind of projects do you design?

We’ve done everything from business cards to annual reports; brochures, fliers, programs, posters in all sizes; nearly everything. We’ve also printed on stickers, outdoor vinyl banner material, plastic, transparency film, and anything else that can be coaxed through a press or copier. We’ve done graphic design for everything from enamel pins, through window stickers, to billboards and Tri-Met bus signage.

Can I submit my own files for printing?

Yes. We support a wide variety of formats (see next question)

What format do you prefer to have files submitted in?

• Original, or “source” file, with any links and fonts. Some programs we support: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop; Microsoft Office - including Publisher, some levels of QuarkXpress and Adobe Pagemaker
(check with us)

• Adobe Acrobat PDF: Preferred pdf format is “press quality”

• Original hard copy: While digital formats give the best results, sometimes hard copy is all that’s available. This is of limited utility, but can be used on the color and black and white copiers, or even scanned and converted.

How can I submit my file?

• Email (if the file is small enough). Larger files can be compressed using WinZip or DropStuff and then emailed.
• On digital media: CD, or any USB equipped personal storage device. Sorry, we no longer support floppy discs or Zip discs.
• An ftp site. Please email us the url and any necessary log in and password

What should I know about digital photograph resolution?

The graphic artist answer is “as much resolution as you can give me”.

Realistically, for print purposes, your photo should be AT LEAST 150 ppi (pixels per inch) AT the size it will be printed.

A photo or illustration grabbed off the internet is often only 72 ppi, and very small. These will not print adequately. In fact, they’ll look horrible - jagged and nasty.

If you’re taking digital photos for your project, please take them at the highest resolution your camera supports. We can work wonders with low light and bad color balance, but one thing we can’t do is realistically manufacture resolution that isn’t there. Also, please make sure to focus. We can’t do much with badly out of focus photos.

We can also scan hard copy photographs for those of you still using film or with old photographs or documents. In this situation we control the resolution.

If this is confusing, call or email Bill. I’m glad to give advice. And it’s a lot cheaper and more efficient to do things well the first time, rather than trying to fix things after the fact.
