Sashes, Patches and the Namanu Red Coats
The Namanu Sash
The Namanu Patch
Walrus commissioned a Program Leader named Solstice to design a crest to be used for identifying the Namanu Site and Staff on the Red Coats. She incorporated some of the physical topography particular to the Namanu Site in the design of the patch. Can you figure out where they came from?
Namanu Red Coats
Walrus introduced the Red Coats from his days at the Howard Outdoor School Site where they originally were brought into the program by Rudy “Digger” Bohm. They are used by staff during official parts of our day and through the course of the week. Not only do they help to identify the staff but serve to create a feeling of tradition and officialdom to our ceremonies and functions.
When do we wear them?
Sundays
Worn to identify ourselves as staff to the new 6th Graders attending Outdoor School.
Flag Ceremonies
Worn when leading the AM and PM flag ceremony our Flag Captain, music and Flag line leaders all don the Red.
Campfire Programs
Worn we greet and seat cabins for cabin calls, and to get our campfire programs off and running each evening.
Friday Final Ceremonies
Worn in our closing ceremonies, Flag and Tree Planting , we also include our Sashes when honoring 5th-6th time student leaders.
We were trying to come up with an alternate “Red” for really warm Friday ceremonies when the idea of a staff sash came up. We already award Sashes to Student Leaders who are out for their sixth time, so why not have a Staff Sash? Lafcadio, Glucose and Weasel stayed up way too late on several evenings planning and designing the sash. With the input of Walrus and other various Namanuites we eventually settled on the Sash you see to the left on Glucose. Lafcadio sewed all of the sashes for both staff and student leaders. The decoding key is below.
