Oregon State Hospital, Portland Campus
Oregon State Hospital's Portland Campus serves adults with mental health needs. Patents who are 18 to 21 and are eligible, or are suspected of being eligible for special education can access the Hospital School Program's instructional services.
Each participating patient has a unique education plan and program. Students can receive educational services in one of three basic modes, including:
~ Working towards completing their GED through guided mentored self-study.
~ Earning basic High School credits through individualized instruction, to apply toward graduation from a local school district.
~ Working to maintain learned skills in order to enhance their success when they transition back to the community.
The education assistant and supervising teacher are considered adjunct members of the treatment team and are included in appropriate staffings and meetings re: patient progress and care.
In many cases, school participation will be included as a required part of the patient's treatment plan. Taking part in the school component is seen as a therapeutic avenue for patients to apply themselves, work through issues of attention, memory, communication and dealing with authority.
