Donald E Long School -- Components, Beliefs and Goals


Components

Orientation Unit - Serves newly detained adolescents who receive a variety of social, emotional, and academic assessments necessary to determine custody needs.

Close Custody Program - Serves adolescents waiting for trials and hearings, or are serving parole and probation violations.

Morrison Center Residential Treatment Program - Serves lone-term adolescents transitioning back to the community from other treatment or corrections facilities, or are committed from other units.

Morrison Center Drug and Alcohol Treatment Program - Serves long-term adolescents receiving services for substance abuse issues.

Measure #11 Program - Serves long-term adolescents charged with adult offenses and are waiting for trail.

Beliefs

Teachers and staff at the Donald E Long School believe that:

* All students can learn
* All students deserve respect, and can be contributing members of society
* Positive school experiences will foster a change in attitude

Student Academic Goals

Students in attendance, will:

* Problem-solve and reason
* Make responsible future choices about life and work
* Increase ability, and demonstrate competency in reading, writing, and math in an effort to move toward CIM proficiencies
* Develop personal qualities reflecting positive self-esteem
* Work as a team member
* Identify and use appropriate resources
* Increase cultural awareness, and demonstrate acceptance of diversity
* Communicate effectively, appropriately using speaking and listening skills
* Acquire, organize, evaluate, and use information
* Increase technology knowledge, and apply appropriate technology to complete a job

Program Goals

Teachers and staff will:

* Work as a cooperative team, providing each student with a positive educational experience in a supportive, healthy, and nuturing environment
* Maintain and enhance a basic educational program, to include moving students toward CIM proficiencies
* Work cooperatively and effectively with Custody Services
* Use available technology in order to provide well-rounded academic opportunities
* Maintain quality strategies and methods through on-going training and support
* Offer employability information and transition skills necessary for return to the community
