Arata Creek School
Arata Creek School is part of the Social-Emotional Skill Program (SESP) operated by Multnomah Education Service District. Arata Creek School provides service to students ages 5-18 years with severe emotional-behavioral disorders. All of the students have been found eligible to receive special education services under one or more disability categories. Emotionally Disturbed (ED) is the primary disability for most of the referred students. Many of the students also have been found eligible for services as students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Other Health Impaired (OHI). Students receive instruction aligned with the Oregon Content Standards. All of the students participate in statewide testing across the content areas.
In addition to the established academic and career related content areas, students participate in violence prevention and social skills instruction daily. A four-part level system defines the continuum of expected behaviors and corresponding privileges. Approximately 70% of the students are successful within the structured environment, small group instructional format, defined continuum system with defined privileges, and a token economy. Other students benefit from very individualized, behavior intervention plans, contracts for defined behavioral expectations and specified reinforcements. Other students require the addition of wrap-around interventions that include positive behavior interventions and frequent coordination between care providers, medical/health professionals, juvenile justice personnel, and/or state social services. Arata Creek School is located at 2470 SW Halsey in the Troutdale area in the Reynolds School District. Arata Creek School serves children from the Corbett, Centennial, David Douglas, Gresham-Barlow, Parkrose, Reynolds, and Estacada District. The districts within Multnomah County (and Clackamas County) refer students for placement in the Social-Emotional Skills Program as part of the continuum of placement options as defined in the Oregon Administrative Rules and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments (IDEA 2001) for providing a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) for students who meet eligibility criteria for special education services.
Arata Creek Schools is considered a "Special Program" placement on the continuum of placement options. Multnomah Education Service District provides the supervision of the staff and daily operation of the program on behalf of the districts in Multnomah County through resolution revenue. Other districts may contract for services as space is available. Approximately 50 students are served in the Social-Emotional Skills Program. The program is designed to serve about 10 elementary students, 25 middle school students, and 15 high schools students. Students attend school from 8:45 AM to 2:35 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9:45 AM to 2:20 PM on Wednesdays..
